Detroit, September 24, 2015—Teach For America–Detroit distributed 1,000 backpacks to Detroit-area students during the first week of the new academic year. Students at Vista Meadows Academy, Trix Performance Academy, and West Side Academy were selected to receive the backpacks based on a nomination by Teach For America and West Side Academy teacher Adam Schilt. As a 10thgrade English teacher, Schilt has witnessed first-hand his students’ determination, but also the lack of resources available to them.
“At West Side Academy, we believe that our students are capable of performing at the highest level when they are provided with the tools and opportunities necessary for success,” said Schilt. “American Eagle and STATE Bags are playing a huge role in making that vision a reality by donating these backpacks. Not only are our students excited to receive quality backpacks on the first day of school, but they are also learning by example what it means to give back to the community.”
Through a national partnership, American Eagle Outfitters and STATE Bags announced that they are donating 20,000 new STATE backpacks to students in high-need communities served by Teach For America during this school year. STATE Bags, a national one-for-one benefit corporation that works to create a positive impact for American children, donates one bag to a child in need for every bag purchased. The donations will provide Detroit students with some of the supplies they need to begin the school year prepared for success.
“We are very grateful to American Eagle and STATE Bags for providing new backpacks to students at three of our partner schools,” said Tiffany Taylor, executive director of Teach For America–Detroit. “It was a privilege to have been part of such a positive way to kick off the school year.”
